This episode covers non-Staphyloccal, non-Streptococcal (and non-Enterococcal) gram-positive cocci. These are variably pathogenic, but sometimes turn up in blood cultures as a contaminant.

Most are sensitive to vancomycin. However, there are some gram positive bugs that are Van-R:

• Staphylococcus haemolyticus
  • Note: not all haemolyticus are van R, but this should help you remember that many Coagulase negative Staphylococci are van R.
• Enterococcus (gallinarum + casseliflavus)
• Erysipelothrix
• Lactobacillus (this is a bacilli)
• Leuconostoc
• Pediococcus

Pnemonic is hEELLP, as in ‘hEELLP, my vancomycin isn’t working!’

• Stuff that looks a bit Staphy (Cat pos)
• Stuff that looks a bit Streppy (Cat neg)
• Anaerobic stuff
